Well, well, it seems the all new 2012 Mazda CX5 crossover suv could be the most fuel efficient crossover on the market when it hits next year. Rumor has it that the CX5 will get an ultra fuel efficient 2.2 liter turbo diesel with 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. But don’t rejoice just yet, North American Mazda CX5 fans. All indications are that the turbo diesel will not be implemented in the North American model, at least not initially.
The European model will get the turbo diesel though, and with its SkyActiv system, lightweight chassis and rebuilt suspension, the Euro Mazda CX5 should post some very impressive fuel economy numbers indeed. Of course, it needs to, if it wants to meet the much more demanding Euro 6 emmisions regulations coming in 2014. If oil prices continue to trend higher in North America, I’m sure demand will dictate a turbo diesel launch in the U.S. and Canadian markets.
We here in North America haven’t had to deal with $6.00 plus gasoline prices yet, but no doubt we will in the not so distant future. And when that happens, models like the turbo diesel Mazda CX5 will be there to save the day.
We expect to see a production Mazda CX5 at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall, with sales beginning in 2012. It seems likely that the Mazda CX5 will launch as a 2013 model.
